Project Coordinator Marion Baruch, mandate from Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing-Lucerne

The conflicts of the 20th century are reflected in the long life of Marion Baruch: fascism, capitalism, communism, feminism, pacifism, migration, social classes, nations, religions, language communities, political ideologies. Marion Baruch concerns herself with inner worlds and outer spaces. The artist’s work revolves around the theme of emptiness; she works with omissions, through views and transparency. She speaks of the “void”, meaning not a spiritual nothingness but rather a free space, in the literal sense, to be understood as an invitation to the viewer.

Marion Baruch's first steel sculptures from 1966 are filigree, accessible drawings in the outdoor space. From 1988 onwards, Marion Baruch reacted critically to the art market using the label NAME DIFFUSION, which means distributing, sharing as a principle, not as a dogma. As a company registered in the commercial register, NAME DIFFUSION realizes art in the business world. The supposedly different systems become confused. For her project une chambre vide (an empty room, 2009) the artist cleared out a room in her small apartment and, over the course of a month, invited people to come and talk there every afternoon. The room may have been empty, but everything else was there: openness, curiosity, delightful exchange…

Marion Baruch's most recent works are formally so strong that their minimal aesthetic almost conceals the thematic complexity. Using the remnants of the textile industry as a kind of readymade, the artist once again addresses the world of labor and resource consumption.
